Møllenberg

Revitalizing a building and a neighborhood

Møllenberg is an old neighborhood in Trondheim built for workers families. In recent years it has been heavily repurposed as student housing by private proprietors. Over 50% of the neighborhoods inhabitants are now students that rent. We’ve explored how to make Møllenberg more attractive for different demographics. The goal has been to attract more variety and inhabitants of all ages. The neighborhood’s connection to the city center should be strengthened through less trafficked roads, more greenery and wider side walks with lanes for cyclists and pedestrians. Our “low-line” brings pedestrians closer to the unique structure of the area by leading them through the hereto unused courtyards. Our designated building, built in 1981, was well preserved and needed very little updates. Our focus has been to suggest small changes to accommodate different types of usage and a variety of tenants. This should also make the building more adaptable for changes in use and inhabitants over time.
